Why are some rooms so easy, while others are so difficult when designing a layout…

There are rooms that can instantly come together and the pieces just fall into place - a perfect example would be a square bedroom. Bedrooms are much easier to design than, let’s say, a multifunctional space like a living room because there is less furniture, and less functional needs.

Other rooms, like a long, narrow living room with multiple focal points, (like I designed in the video) can be a challenge due to those exact reasons.

But while they’re difficult - they’re no where near impossible.

When it comes to a space with multiple focal points, the solution is to prioritize function and flow. Asking yourself questions like what is the purpose of the room and how do you intend on utilizing it. In this rendering, I wanted to keep focal points visually open while creating a flow from the kitchen to the living room. The narrow design of the living room did become a challenge when it came to selecting seating, but again, my goal was to create zones while keeping visual flow free from obstructions.

Which layout did you like better?
